DESCRIPTION:More than 170 years after Frederick Douglass delivered his landmark speech\, What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?\, its questions about freedom\, citizenship\, and equality continue to resonate. \nJoin the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, Josephine School Community Museum\, and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley for this free program commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and exploring how the nation’s founding ideals have been challenged\, claimed\, and expanded over time. \nThe program features readings from Douglass’s 1852 speech by retired college professors James R. Coates Jr. and Miles K. Davis. Commentary will be provided by Leah Brown\, Associate Director of Education and Collections at the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, followed by a question-and-answer session. \nPresented as part of the VA250 initiative\, the program invites participants to consider the nation’s founding principles and the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality. \nAdmission is free. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Reserve your spot through the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley event page or call 540-662-1473\, ext. 240. Walk-ins are welcome as space permits. \nBefore or after the program\, visit the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and experience the opening day of the special exhibition Revolutionary Valley. Blakey is National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Anthropology\, Africana Studies\, and American Studies at William & Mary\, where he is founding director of the Institute for Historical Biology. \nFrom 1992 to 2009\, Blakey served as Scientific Director of Howard University’s African Burial Ground Project in New York City. Since 2004\, he has served on the Scholarly Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. \nAn author of more than 80 articles in refereed journals\, Blakey has lectured on bioarchaeology\, publicly engaged archaeology and racism at universities and museums across the United States and in Africa\, Asia\, Australia\, Europe and South America. \n \n  \nAbout the Rev. L. Francis Griffin Lecture\nKnown as “The Fighting Preacher\,” Rev. L. Francis  \n  \nGriffin Sr. was the longtime pastor of First Baptist Church in Farmville\, a community leader and a steadfast advocate for equal education and civil rights. \nHis leadership was central to Prince Edward County’s struggle for equal education—from standing with the students of Robert Russa Moton High School following their 1951 strike to continuing the fight during the years Prince Edward County’s public schools were closed. \nThe Rev. DESCRIPTION:Featuring Farmville Native and Two-Time Oscar Winner Angus Wall \n\nWhat does it take to tell the story of someone the world already thinks it knows?\nOn Thursday\, October 1\, the Moton Museum welcomes filmmaker and Farmville native Angus Wall for a conversation about the making of Being Eddie\, his acclaimed Netflix documentary exploring the life and nearly five-decade career of Eddie Murphy. \nWall brings an extraordinary body of work to the conversation. The multiple Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker is known for his work on The Social Network\, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button\, along with HBO’s Game of Thrones and Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed documentary 13th. \nNow streaming on Netflix\, Being Eddie draws from Murphy’s own reflections\, archival material and conversations with artists and collaborators including Dave Chappelle\, Chris Rock\, Jamie Foxx\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Kevin Hart and Tracee Ellis Ross. The film was named Outstanding Documentary (Film) at the 57th NAACP Image Awards. \nWall’s visit to Farmville will begin earlier in the day at Prince Edward County High School\, where he will meet with the senior class for a program focused on arts and media. \nAt 6:00 p.m.\, the program moves to Moton Museum\, where Wall will meet with the community and take audiences behind the scenes of Being Eddie\, sharing how the documentary came together—from working with decades of material to the decisions that shaped the finished film. \nJoin us at Moton Museum\, a National Historic Landmark\, for an evening with Angus Wall and an inside look at the craft behind Being Eddie. \nFree and open to the public.
