Join us in learning more about civil rights in education in Farmville\, Virginia. \nIn this virtual class\, teachers will engage with both live and recorded lectures\, while reviewing Civil Rights\, Massive Resistance\, and Desegregation histories. We follow the Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual and suggest 60 recertification points for this class. DESCRIPTION:Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence\n\n3 Positions \nElementary School: Virginia Studies\nMiddle School: U.S. History\, or Civics;\nHigh School: U.S. & Virginia History\, or U.S. Government\n \nSummer Stipend Position \nThe Russa Moton Museum\, invites candidates to apply for the Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence Program for the summer of 2021. Under the guidance of the Director of Education and Outreach\, the Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence will: \n\nengage in curriculum development\, content creation\, experiential learning opportunities\, and project-based learning;\nhave the opportunity to work with museum staff\, historians\, individuals who lived this history (and their descendants) to undergo a deep content dive into Virginia and U.S. Civil Rights history; and\nlearn in-depth\, best practice\, civil rights history education training.\n\nContent related to and highlighting Barbara Johns and the Moton School Story are included in various History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL). As a teacher in residence\, there is a great opportunity for individuals with experience teaching Virginia Studies\, U.S. History or Civics; Virginia and United States History or Virginia and United States Government. \nThe Moton Museum will select three candidates; one to represent each level and join as the inaugural K-12 Teacher in Residence cohort. Each selected candidates will focus on either Virginia Studies\, United States History or Civics; Virginia and United States History or Virginia and United States U.S. Government. Her lecture\, “Fighting Back\, Forging Ahead: How Race and Power Shaped the Collective Memory of Black Student Protests in Prince Edward County\,” is scheduled for Thursday\, March 18\, at 7:00p.m. virtually. It is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, Longwood Department of History\, Political Science\, & Philosophy\, and the Greenwood Library. \nC.G. Gordon Moss was a professor of history at Longwood College from 1944-69. He served as department chair from 1947-60 and dean of the faculty from 1960-64. During the school closings in Prince Edward County from 1959-64\, Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all Americans. The C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture features historians who study democracy\, social justice and social activism in American history. The C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture is sponsored by the Longwood University Department of History\, Political Science and Philosophy and the Office of Academic Affairs.

SUMMARY:Moton Author Series: An Evening with Dr. Alfred L. Cobbs
DESCRIPTION:Join the Moton Museum for our first virtual Author Event of the year featuring Dr. Alfred L. Cobbs\, author of the new memoir Locked Out: Finding freedom and education after Prince Edward County closed its schools. \n\n\nFrom 1959-1964\, Prince Edward County\, Virginia chose to close its public schools rather than desegregate them following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. Alfred L. Cobbs\, a tenth grader at the time\, was one of the casualties among the African American students of the “lock out” generation. In Locked Out\, Cobbs chronicles his struggle for an education in the face of this traumatic experience. \n\nWith the support of a family who lived outside the county and took him in\, Cobbs was able to finish high school. In college\, he found refuge in the study and immersion in the German language and culture\, which aided him in finding his way existentially\, and ultimately led him to a rewarding career as a professor. Locked Out is a testimony of human perseverance and triumph against the odds.

SUMMARY:Moton Mondays: Elvatrice Parker Belsches
DESCRIPTION:This event was rescheduled from February 15 to February 22 at 12 noon due to weather. We will be joined by Elvatrice Parker Belsches\, a public historian\, researcher and filmmaker who specializes in chronicling the Black experience in history.  She is the author of the pictorial publication\, Black America Series: Richmond\, Virginia (Arcadia Publishing) and she has several documentaries in development. \nBelsches will take the audience on a journey into civil rights in education through the memories of her late parents who were gifted educators.  Belsches’ father\, the late Ernest Parker Sr. taught mathematics at Robert R. Moton High School from 1951-1955\, where he also served as an assistant football coach and athletic director. While serving as Barbara Johns’ homeroom and algebra teacher\, he discovered the students making placards in the back of the class in preparation for the student walkout in 1951.  The walkout launched a series of events that laid the groundwork for the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling deeming segregation unconstitutional\, and prompted Prince Edward County schools to close rather than integrate for five years.  The students’ signs\, with messages like “We want a new school” are printed indelibly in the nation’s collective memory of the civil rights movement\, and are treasured pieces of her family’s legacy.

SUMMARY:Barbara Rose Johns: The Story Behind the Statue
DESCRIPTION:An event sponsored by the Salem History Museum \nA statue of Barbara Johns will soon be installed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda\, joining George Washington to represent Virginia. Cameron Patterson\, the Executive Director of the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, will share her story and the role she played in bringing an end to segregated schools. The Zoom link will be on the Salem Museum’s website on the day of the talk. https://salemmuseum.org/ \n\n\nBefore Selma\, before Montgomery\, young people made history in Farmville\, Virginia. On April 23\, 1951\, Barbara Johns—a Black\, 16 year-old high school girl—led her classmates in a strike to protest substandard conditions at their school\, Robert Russa Moton High School in Prince Edward County. Two NAACP lawyers\, Spottswood Robinson and Oliver Hill\, took up the cause for more equitable conditions. Robinson and Hill filed suit—Davis v. Prince Edward—at the federal courthouse in Richmond. In 1954\, the Farmville case became one of five that the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed in Brown v Board of Education of Topeka\, when it declared segregation unconstitutional. \n\nThe Robert Russa Moton Museum is a National Historic Landmark preserving and interpreting the history of Civil Rights in Education. Before joining the Moton in 2017\, Patterson worked at Longwood University. He has served as a member of the Virginia African American Advisory Board and the State Board of Directors for the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities\, and as Vice Chairman for the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Farmville Planning Commission. A Lynchburg native\, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in History\, and a Master’s in Counselor Education from Longwood University.

DESCRIPTION:Join Moton Executive Director Cameron Patterson as he facilitates a conversation with staff members from the National Trust for Historic Preservation regard an exciting new project to #TellTheFullStory regarding Brown v. Board of Education. \nIn partnership with the offices of House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC) and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE)\, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund is working with local partners including the Robert Russa Moton Museum to join the stories of these places with those already being told at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka\, Kansas\, creating opportunities for public education and interpretation while allowing buildings to maintain their current uses as schools\, community centers\, and offices. \nThis work is an opportunity to give voice to the stories of dozens of parents\, students\, attorneys\, and activists who not only struggled to secure the Brown v. Board decision\, but also often weathered the continued fight to integrate in its aftermath. \n
