Over his career\, he has secured grants from the Fulbright Commission\, the U.S. Department of Education\, the North Carolina Arts Council\, and the National Writing Project. \nOf Cherokee and Meherrin descent\, Resa Crane Bizzaro earned degrees in Creative Writing\, Literature\, and Composition. Her work encompasses Native identity rhetorics\, intergenerational PTSD\, southern literature\, and contemporary poetry. Children must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nDuring the celebration\, guests of all ages will have the opportunity to tour the Robert Russa Moton Museum and take part in a variety of art activities led by the LCVA. She holds a B.A. from Millsaps College\, an M.A. from Mississippi College\, and a Ph.D. in English from Texas A&M University\, all in English. \nHer father\, Edgar Simmons\, was an English teacher and a noted Mississippi poet whose second book\, Driving to Biloxi\, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry in 1968. \nJes’s poetry has appeared in College English Association Critic\, Mississippi Arts and Letters\, College English\, Cornfed Angel\, Magnolia State Quarterly Review\, James Dickey Newsletter\, Natchez Trace Literary Review\, Salome\, River City Review\, and Sojourners. Her work is also included in anthologies such as Mississippi Writers: Reflections of Childhood and Youth\, Mud Flat Verse\, and The Southern Poetry Anthology. \nJes has made Farmville\, Virginia her chosen home since 2013. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Robert Russa Moton Museum invites the community to a special screening and discussion of The Harvest\, presented as part of our Black History Month programming. \nFrom PBS American Experience: In The Harvest\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas A. Blackmon looks back at how school integration transformed his hometown of Leland\, Mississippi. After the 1954 Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional\, little more than token efforts were made to desegregate Southern schools. That changed dramatically on October 29\, 1969\, when the high court ordered that Mississippi schools to fully and immediately desegregate. As a result\, a group of children\, including six-year-old Blackmon\, became part of the first class of Black and white children who would attend all 12 grades together in Leland.\n\nSet against vast historic and demographic changes unfolding across America\, The Harvest follows a coalition of Black and white citizens working to create racially integrated public schools in a cotton town in the middle of the Mississippi Delta\, the most rigidly segregated area in America. It tells the extraordinary story of how that first class became possible\, then traces the lives of Blackmon and his classmates\, teachers\, and parents from the first day through high school graduation in 1982. It is a riveting portrait of how those children’s lives were transformed and how the town — and America — were changed. But as the film follows the lives of those children into the present\, it is also a portrait of what our society has lost in its failure to finish the work begun a generation ago. \n\nAbout the Author\nDouglas A. Blackmon is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning author\, journalist\, and filmmaker. His first book\, Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II\, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for its searing revelation of a largely forgotten system that continued to hold African-Americans in forced labor after the Civil War and persisted deep into the 20th century. DESCRIPTION:The Robert Russa Moton Museum is honored to welcome award-winning scholar and author Dr. Terence Hicks for a special Moton Author Series presentation and book signing of Prince Edward County\, Virginia School Closing: A Compilation of Research Studies. \nThis important volume brings together rigorous scholarship examining one of the most defining chapters in the Moton story — the five-year closure of Prince Edward County’s public schools following the 1951 student strike and the Davis v. County School Board case. Through research grounded in history\, education\, and civil rights\, the book deepens understanding of how the school closings reshaped lives\, families\, and the national movement for equal education. \nDr. Hicks’s distinguished career bridges scholarship and public impact. A tenured Full Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at East Tennessee State University and former dean at both ETSU and Prairie View A&M University\, his work centers on educational access and historically marginalized communities. In 2024 he received both the Virginia Social Science Association Scholar Award and the Legacy Award — honors shared by figures such as civil rights attorney Oliver Hill\, whose legal leadership in Davis v. County School Board stands at the heart of the Moton story. This recognition places Dr. Hicks among scholars whose work advances equity\, historical truth\, and community-centered scholarship. \nAs a Virginia-educated scholar whose work engages the very history preserved at Moton\, Dr. Hicks joins a living circle of researchers\, educators\, and descendants dedicated to documenting and understanding the Prince Edward County school closings. His presence continues the Museum’s tradition of bringing scholarship into conversation with lived experience. \nA nationally and internationally recognized social scientist\, Dr. Hicks’s research focuses on first-generation college students and historically marginalized populations in higher education. His work has been presented throughout the United States and internationally\, including Puerto Rico\, the Bahamas\, Jamaica\, Mexico\, England\, Spain\, and at the World Conference on Education and Teaching in Rome\, Italy. DESCRIPTION:Now accepting applications for the 2026-2027 academic year.\nThe C.G. Moss Scholars Program at the Moton Museum is a collaborative program with Longwood University and commemorates the legacy of Dr. C. G. Gordon Moss\, who served as a Professor of History at Longwood College from 1944-1969. Dr. Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all American citizens. The Moss Scholars are selected annually and serve in a leadership role working alongside museum staff to help connect Longwood students with the Moton Museum beyond an initial visit by providing opportunities for volunteer experiences with the museum\, assisting museum staff in building engagement experiences around Moton for the broader campus community\, and engagement with the broader Farmville/Prince Edward community. \nAs Moss Scholars\, students take on a visible leadership role\, helping to build meaningful connections between Longwood University and the Robert Russa Moton Museum. Through this work\, scholars support student engagement\, contribute to campus-wide experiences\, and help extend the reach of the Moton story into the broader Farmville and Prince Edward County community. \nEach selected Moss Scholar will receive a $1\,250 scholarship for the 2026-2027 academic year. \n\nEligibility Requirements \nApplicants must: \n\nBe a student in good academic and disciplinary standing\nBe seeking a degree from Longwood University\nBe currently enrolled full-time as a junior or senior\nDemonstrate a commitment to the ideals reflected in the legacy of Dr. C. DESCRIPTION:More than 170 years after Frederick Douglass delivered his landmark speech\, What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?\, its questions about freedom\, citizenship\, and equality continue to resonate. \nJoin the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, Josephine School Community Museum\, and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley for this free program commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and exploring how the nation’s founding ideals have been challenged\, claimed\, and expanded over time. \nThe program features readings from Douglass’s 1852 speech by retired college professors James R. Coates Jr. and Miles K. Davis. Commentary will be provided by Leah Brown\, Associate Director of Education and Collections at the Robert Russa Moton Museum\, followed by a question-and-answer session. \nPresented as part of the VA250 initiative\, the program invites participants to consider the nation’s founding principles and the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality. \nAdmission is free. Since 2004\, he has served on the Scholarly Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. \nAn author of more than 80 articles in refereed journals\, Blakey has lectured on bioarchaeology\, publicly engaged archaeology and racism at universities and museums across the United States and in Africa\, Asia\, Australia\, Europe and South America. \n \n  \nAbout the Rev. L. Francis Griffin Lecture\nKnown as “The Fighting Preacher\,” Rev. L. The multiple Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker is known for his work on The Social Network\, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button\, along with HBO’s Game of Thrones and Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed documentary 13th. \nNow streaming on Netflix\, Being Eddie draws from Murphy’s own reflections\, archival material and conversations with artists and collaborators including Dave Chappelle\, Chris Rock\, Jamie Foxx\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Kevin Hart and Tracee Ellis Ross.
