This event dives deep into the journey from the Early Republic to the Civil Rights Era\, weaving a continuous narrative of Black Virginia’s history and the quest for equality. \nBy participating in both days\, attendees will gain in-depth insights into the resilience and enduring legacy of these critical periods in history. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you to this enlightening journey. \nAdmission is Free\, Lunch provided for both days. For convenience a Free Shuttle Bus will depart from the Red Hill to Moton at 9:00 am. Gordon Moss Lecture will feature the Organization of American Historians (OAH) Distinguished Lecturer\, Dr. Mia Bay\, a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. \nDr. Bay will discuss her book Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance. Traveling Black tells the history of the African American experience on segregated transportation from the antebellum era to the present day. Dr. Bay explores what it was like to travel in Jim Crow cars\, ride at the back of the bus\, and navigate a myriad of discriminatory travel accommodations—from whites-only service stations to segregated airline terminals. It underscores that blacks bitterly resented these humiliations and resisted them fiercely\, recovering an intertwined history of travel segregation and black struggles for freedom of movement. \nThe annual C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture is sponsored by the Moton Museum\, Longwood University’s Office of Academic Affairs\, Greenwood Library\, and Department of History\, Political Science\, and Philosophy.  Admission is free and open to all. Panelists will explore how judicial review originated on the Marshall Court in 1803\, and its impact on five court cases in the decades to follow. This program will trace how the United States legal system evolved in jurisprudence from pro-slavery Chief Justice John Marshall who worked to prevent Black freedom in the 19th century\, to R.R. Moton and the desegregation of American schools in the mid-20th century. “From Marshall to Moton: Judicial Review and Civil Rights” will be held in person at the Moton Museum as well as live-streamed. SUMMARY:C.G. Gordon Moss Scholars Program Applications Due 2023-2024
DESCRIPTION:The C.G. Moss Scholars Program at the Moton Museum is a collaborative program with Longwood University and commemorates the legacy of Dr. C. G. Gordon Moss\, who served as a Professor of History at Longwood College from 1944-1969. Dr. Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all American citizens. \nThe Moss Scholars are selected annually and serve in a leadership role working alongside museum staff to help connect Longwood students with the Moton Museum beyond an initial visit by providing opportunities for volunteer experiences with the museum\, assisting museum staff in building engagement experiences around Moton for the broader campus community\, and engagement with the broader Farmville/Prince Edward community. \nEach Moss Scholar will receive a $2\,500 scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year. \nEligibility:\n• Must be a student in good academic and disciplinary standing.\n• A student seeking a degree from Longwood University.\n• Currently enrolled full-time Junior or Senior.\n• Shows commitment to the ideals important to Dr. C.G. DESCRIPTION:This year’s Dr. C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture will feature Dr. Melvin Patrick Ely\, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Humanities in History at William & Mary and author of Israel on the Appomattox. Dr. Ely’s talk is titled\, “A Horrible Intimacy: Courtroom Dramas of Life\, Death\, Love\, Hate\, Sex and Slavery in Prince Edward County” and is scheduled for Thursday\, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. in Radcliff Hall at Longwood University. It is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Moton Museum\, Longwood University Department of History\, Political Science\, & Philosophy\, the Greenwood Library\, and the Longwood University Office of Academic Affairs. The C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture is funded by the Sharon Coulter Gibb Fund.\n\nABOUT THE NAMESAKE: C.G. Gordon Moss was a professor of history at Longwood College from 1944-69. He served as department chair from 1947-60 and dean of the faculty from 1960-64. During the school closings in Prince Edward County from 1959-64\, Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all Americans. The C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture features historians who study democracy\, social justice and social activism in American history.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER: Melvin Patrick Ely is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Humanities and Professor of History and Africana Studies at the College of William & Mary. He has also taught at Yale University\, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, and Leiden University in The Netherlands. Both of his previous books were reviewed on the front cover of the New York Times Book Review. The second of them\, Israel on the Appomattox\, about free Black people of Prince Edward County before the Civil War\, won the Bancroft Prize; two American Historical Association Awards\, for best book in the history of the Americas and best book in African American history; and the Library of Virginia Literary Award. Ely has also received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia and\, from Yale University\, prizes both for excellence in teaching and for distinction in research and publication. He is a native of Richmond\, where he now lives.

DESCRIPTION:As a part of our signature programs we are pleased to bring back our Moton Jazz Concert. This concert which has occurred since 2018 has been a great way for people to get together over food\, beverage\, and music. \nThis year we will bring back Desiree Roots from Richmond\, VA. Desiree has starred in over 30 stage productions. Recent theatre credits include lead roles as Effie White in DREAMGIRLS\, Sofia in The Color Purple\, and Caroline in Caroline or Change where she received the RTCC Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Desiree was previously at the Moton Museum in 2018 and performed for a packed house her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. \nJoin us on February 18th at 6:00pm in the Moton Museum for food\, drinks\, and great music.
