Black Panther Wakanda Forever is the sequel to the original Black Panther film. The Wakandans fight against underwater threat Namor in the wake of  King T’Challa’s death. Desiree has starred in over 30 stage productions. Recent theatre credits include lead roles as Effie White in DREAMGIRLS\, Sofia in The Color Purple\, and Caroline in Caroline or Change where she received the RTCC Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Desiree was previously at the Moton Museum in 2018 and performed for a packed house her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. \nJoin us on February 18th at 6:00pm in the Moton Museum for food\, drinks\, and great music. Dr. Derrick Alridge will share about his work with the Teachers in the Movement: Pedagogy\, Activism\, and Freedom Oral History Project. It explores ‘teachers’ ideas and pedagogy inside and outside the classroom during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. \nRev. Griffin was known locally and nationally as the “fighting preacher\,” a civil rights advocate who helped to led the fight for civil rights in education and was a voice of opposition to the decision by Prince Edward County to close the public schools rather than integrate. The Rev. L. Francis Griffin observance is held on or in the days leading up to his September 15 birthdate and seeks to honor the contributions of the iconic civil rights leader. \nJoin us in person and virtually (Facebook & YouTube @MotonMuseum) Thursday\, September 15\, 2022 at 7:00pm with a reception to follow. Virginia Studies (4th-6th graders) can engage with the museum at 10:00am during our first webinar. This presentation will introduce them to Barbara Johns and her legacy with the 1951 student walkout that led to Prince Edward County being involved in the 1954 Brown v. Board Supreme Court case. \n\nCivics\, US History\, and US Government (7th-12th graders) students can learn about Barbara Johns and the political changes that happened after 1951 student strike at 1:00pm. This presentation begins with the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case to help explain how Jim Crow laws impacted the students in Prince Edward County and why they were inspired to walk out on April 23\, 1951. DESCRIPTION:The C.G. Moss Scholars Program at the Moton Museum is a collaborative program with Longwood University and commemorates the legacy of Dr. C. G. Gordon Moss\, who served as a Professor of History at Longwood College from 1944-1969. Dr. Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all American citizens. \nThe Moss Scholars are selected annually and serve in a leadership role working alongside museum staff to help connect Longwood students with the Moton Museum beyond an initial visit by providing opportunities for volunteer experiences with the museum\, assisting museum staff in building engagement experiences around Moton for the broader campus community\, and engagement with the broader Farmville/Prince Edward community. \nEach Moss Scholar will receive a $2\,500 scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. \nEligibility:\n• Must be a student in good academic and disciplinary standing.\n• A student seeking a degree from Longwood University.\n• Currently enrolled full-time Junior or Senior.\n• Shows commitment to the ideals important to Dr. C.G. Her lecture\, “Have a Vision and be Demanding: The Enduring Legacy of leaders at the Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville\, Virginia\,” is scheduled for Wednesday\, March 23\, at 7:00p.m. in Blackwell Ballroom at Longwood University and virtually on YouTube and Facebook (@MotonMuseum). It is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Moton Museum\, Longwood University Department of History\, Political Science\, & Philosophy\, the Greenwood Library\, and the Longwood University Office of Academic Affairs. The C.G. Gordon Moss Lecture is funded by the Sharon Coulter Gibb Fund. \nC.G. Gordon Moss was a professor of history at Longwood College from 1944-69. He served as department chair from 1947-60 and dean of the faculty from 1960-64. During the school closings in Prince Edward County from 1959-64\, Moss became an outspoken advocate of reopening the schools and of equality and justice for all Americans. The C.G. Free and open to the public. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://longwood-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUpcOyvpzssH9GT4OSRQsjsPNtAASy3EgaA \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nThe film beautifully chronicles the lives of courageous past and present activists fighting for racial equity\, environmental justice and indigenous rights through the eyes of Maine artist Robert Shetterly.  \nShetterly has painted over 250 portraits of truth tellers such as Charlottesville activist Zyahna Bryant (pictured above)\, Civil Rights leaders Fannie Lou Hamer and Bayard Rustin among many others.  \nHe calls his art project Americans Who Tell the Truth. \n\nThe screening will be followed by a meaningful conversation with the artist and cover the intersection of history and civic engagement with an opportunity for interaction and dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Author Yolanda Gladden Children’s Book Discussion  \nSaturday February 19th at 12:00pm \nFree and open to the public \nAn awe-inspiring autobiographical picture book about a young African American girl who lived during the shutdown of public schools in Farmville\, Virginia\, following the landmark civil rights case Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. \nMost people think that the Brown vs. Board of Education decision of 1954 meant that schools were integrated with deliberate speed. But the children of Prince Edward County located in Farmville\, Virginia\, who were prohibited from attending formal schools for five years knew differently\, including Yolanda. \nTold by Yolanda Gladden herself\, cowritten by Dr. Tamara Pizzoli and with illustrations by Keisha Morris\, When the Schools Shut Down is a true account of the unconstitutional effort by white lawmakers of this small Virginia town to circumvent racial justice by denying an entire generation of children an education. \nMost importantly\, it is a story of how one community triumphed together\, despite the shutdown.

SUMMARY:The Life & Legacy of Phillip Ward
DESCRIPTION:The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society invites everyone to join them for their February meeting at The Robert Russa Moton Museum. \n2/15/22 at 7:00pm \nThe Life & Legacy of Phillip Ward presented by Dr. Letoshia Foster\, Longwood University – Professor of History \nJoin us as we discuss the life and legacy of Phillip Ward. Mr. Ward was born into slavery in Amelia County\, on the plantation of Charles Farmer. In an account later shared with WPA interviewers in the 1930s\, Philip Ward described an encounter with Union Army soldiers in the last days of the Civil War. His family lived\, he recounted\, “in a log cabin at the foot of a hill\, out in a field nearby some thick woods.” Through those woods\, one day\, appeared a long column of Yankee soldiers. “Then this big general\,” he recalled\, “all dirty\, with a thick beard covering most of his face\, come up to the plantation house and tell our master and missus that he was going to stay there.” That general\, he later found out\, was none other than Ulysses S. Grant. Farmville in 1884\, Philip Ward was hired as a cook. He quickly worked his way up to the position of head chef and by 1898\, his son Charles joined him in the kitchen. In 1934 Mr. Ward was honored during the 50th Anniversary of the school and was presented with an honorary degree during a special ceremony. Although he retired in 1940\, the legacy of Philip Ward continued at Longwood through his son Charles\, cook and head baker at the school for over 50 years. As well\, his grandson Phillip\, who worked in the school kitchens from 1945 until his death in 1971\, was known for his massive cakes made to celebrate special occasions.

DESCRIPTION:Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence\n\n3 Positions \nElementary School: Virginia Studies\nMiddle School: U.S. History\, or Civics;\nHigh School: U.S. & Virginia History\, or U.S. Government\n \nSummer Stipend Position \nThe Russa Moton Museum\, invites candidates to apply for the Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence Program for the summer of 2021. Under the guidance of the Director of Education and Outreach\, the Moton K-12 Teacher in Residence will: \n\nengage in curriculum development\, content creation\, experiential learning opportunities\, and project-based learning;\nhave the opportunity to work with museum staff\, historians\, individuals who lived this history (and their descendants) to undergo a deep content dive into Virginia and U.S. Civil Rights history; and\nlearn in-depth\, best practice\, civil rights history education training.\n\nContent related to and highlighting Barbara Johns and the Moton School Story are included in various History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL). As a teacher in residence\, there is a great opportunity for individuals with experience teaching Virginia Studies\, U.S. History or Civics; Virginia and United States History or Virginia and United States Government. \nThe Moton Museum will select three candidates; one to represent each level and join as the inaugural K-12 Teacher in Residence cohort. Each selected candidates will focus on either Virginia Studies\, United States History or Civics; Virginia and United States History or Virginia and United States U.S. Government.
