Rev. L. Francis Griffin Lecture 2024

Farmville, VA: This year’s Rev. L. Francis Griffin Lecture will feature Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and President Emeritus at the University of Richmond, Dr. Edward “Ed” Ayers. The Griffin Lecture will take place on October 2nd, at 7:00pm inside the Moton Museum. Dr. Ayers will discuss the use of religious freedom in the emancipation of enslaved persons in the United States.
Rev. Griffin was known locally and nationally as the “fighting preacher,” a civil rights advocate who helped to led the fight for civil rights in education and was a voice of opposition to the decision by Prince Edward County to close the public schools rather than integrate. The Rev. L. Francis Griffin observance seeks to honor the contributions of this iconic civil rights leader. Rev. Griffin worked here in Prince Edward County and beyond to help lead the struggle for racial equality. This observance is marked with a reflection upon themes of faith, history, education, and social justice. Activities of reflection and remembrance are sponsored annually by the Moton Museum as we offer tribute to Rev. Griffin for his courageous leadership. Admission is free and open to all.
