Dear Educators,
As the 2025–2026 academic year begins, the staff at the Robert Russa Moton Museum is pleased to offer a variety of no-cost learning opportunities for you and your students. These programs are thoughtfully designed to enrich your curriculum and encourage students to explore the evolving story of American democracy and civic engagement.
Each experience is carefully aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and supports instruction across multiple grade levels, from elementary to high school.
Why Moton?
At the core of our educational approach are primary sources—documents, images, and artifacts that challenge students to investigate history through multiple perspectives. Our custom-made graphic organizers support this exploration and help guide student analysis and reflection. Contextual materials are also provided to strengthen student understanding of key historical events.
Students who visit or engage with Moton programs encounter the powerful stories preserved in our six-gallery permanent exhibition, which examines the Prince Edward County school crisis within the broader civil rights movement. Through a balanced presentation of voices—those advocating for and those resisting change—we emphasize historical thinking and interpretation.
From understanding community roles in early learning to analyzing landmark court decisions in high school, each program is designed to meet students where they are and deepen their civic knowledge.
